Employment growth was entirely in part-time work and concentrated among youth aged 15 to 24. The June Increases were driven by Accommodation and food services, and Retail trade—two industries where part-time workers represent an above-average proportion of employment. Full-time employment was little change in June and remain 2.2% below its February 2020 level.

After two consecutive months of job losses, the Canadian economy has made strong gains in June, adding 230,700 positions as COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. The unemployment rate fell to 7.8% (-0.4%).
All the new positions were in part-time work and most of the gains were in the service industry, notably in accommodation and food services (+11.8%), retail (+3.4%) and other services (3.3%). The growth in part-time work directly benefited youth aged 15 to 24 with an increase in employment of 7.1% (164,000 jobs) for that demographic. Full-time employment was little changed in June.
Despite the June gains in employment in accommodation and food services as well as retail, these two sectors, among the hardest hit by the pandemic, still account for a large portion of the 340,000 job gap compared to February 2020.

More people enter the labour force

The good news for employers is the increase by 170,000 (+0.8) in the number of people in the labour force – either employed or unemployed – and the 0.6 percentage point increase of the labour force participation rate up to 65.2%. The employment rate (60.1%) is 1.7 percentage points lower than the pre-pandemic level in February 2020 (61.8%).

Four provinces saw employment rise

Ontario (+1.6%), Quebec (+1.7%), British Columbia (+1.6%) and Nova Scotia (+3.1%) saw an increase in employment for the month of June, while New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Alberta saw little change. Employment decreased in Saskatchewan (-1.2%), Manitoba (-1.0%) and Prince Edward Island (-1.8%).

An early sign of a return to the office

The number of Canadians working from home dropped by nearly 400,000 to 4.7 million while the number of Canadians working at locations other than home increased by 700,000. These could be early signs of a return to work as vaccination rates increased and COVID-19 restrictions continue to be lifted.
